Windows developers have come to rely on AutoRun and AutoPlay functionality to deliver snazzy software that makes a good first impression.
AutoRun technology automatically starts a program when an external disk, such as a CD or USB drive, is connected to a computer. AutoPlay lets users pick from a menu of actions, instead of hunting through folders on a disk.
In Windows 7 and higher, however, this situation has changed. Unfortunately, this move intended to stop the spread of viruses hurts legitimate developers as well. To automatically run a program when a USB drive is connected, developers of software for Windows have to resort to workarounds.
These USB sticks can take advantage of autorun functionality like any other CD: they can copy files, install programs, and more. Flashbay company is one vendor of such drives. Here is a step-by-step guide explaining how this can be done. How do they work? I inserted the disc into the drive, but the 'Ask Me' dialog box didn't pop up, which it usually does. I've changed registry values for cdrom entry and the NoDriveType Autorun. But still there is the issue of Autoplay not working. Any help is appreciated, but it needs to be easy enough for me to follow - no complicate instructions.
Does the drive expand to show the files on the DVD? You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the files. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked.
You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Before attempting the instructions below, verify the CD not AutoPlaying can do this. Not all CDs are capable of being auto played. If Play was not an option listed when following the above steps, in the "Edit File type" window click New.
