This can be an issue if you are running low on hard disk space, or if, for example, you use one of those solid state drives that have a very small capacity. It can also cause problems if you have sensitive documents on your system, like files with customer credit card numbers, that you want to delete before say sending a computer for repair. Simply deleting the file, or even wiping out the file securely isn't sufficient. The volume shadow copies of your file will still exist.
To turn off volume shadow copy, first bring up the System Properties window by going to your start menu, and opening up the Control Panel. In Control Panel, click "System and Maintenance".
On the left panel, look for a line that says "System protection" and click it. Click the "Continue" button. In the dialog box that appears, you should be able to see a list box with all the available drives on your computer. Next to each drive is a check box. If there is a check in the box next to the drive, it means volume shadow copy, along with System Restore, is enabled for that drive.
To disable volume shadow copy, simply uncheck the box. A dialog box will appear asking if you are sure you want to turn off System Restore. Click the "Turn System Restore off" button. Finally, click the OK button. As you have probably realised, the volume shadow copy facility is tied to the system restore feature of Windows. When you turn one off, you also turn the other off. This is unfortunate, since the System Restore may have its uses when you need to restore the state of your Windows system and programs back to a particular date such as before you made some disastrous mistake.
However, you can compensate for the lack of a system restore by keeping up-to-date backups of your hard disk. This is in many ways, is better than having system restore, since the latter doesn't really cleanly restore a system to an earlier state.
If you like to keep previous versions of your files but just don't like Vista's built-in facility or perhaps you are using XP or some earlier version of Windows , you can also install a third party version control system.
These specialized software are generally more powerful than Windows built-in facility. Free versions of such software can be found on thefreecountry. Shows the Following This still leaves me with the Question as to what my HD usage is made up of. What does the balance of 4. May not have anything to do with Shadowcopies? On my "C" drive Vista Ultimate bit , I show the following big space eaters: 1 hiberfil. So, if you're running the same amount of memory, there's 4GB. WAW8, Feb 8, Hi WAW Finally got the solution..
That's unfortunately a well-known problem with ATI 11! Please note the important point -- it only happens AFTER you do a restore with ATI 11, and even then, only if you have a multi-partition drive and you only restore the Vista partition.
This is because, in this situation, ATI restore reloads the Vista partition at a slight different offset than it was originally stored. After the restore, several things happen: 1 Vista won't boot.
This changes the Vista boot loader to find the "new" location of the Vista partition. You will see this in the System Restore panel, and you fix this by unchecking the "first" "C" drive and checking the "second" C drive.
After both of these are done, and you reboot, System Restorer, shadow copies, and Restore Points are supposed to work again. It's been reported that once Vista is "fixed", it now "remembers" the offset of the Vista partition and subsequent restores using ATI 11 don't cause the problem anymore.
BTW, this problem was discovered back in the ATI 10 days I've been following it since then and Acronis has promised to fix it with every release and drop since then.
WAW8, Feb 9, Hi WAW 8,Just to say thanks for your time and effort.. Great to learn about the CMD Prompt method of deleteing shadow copies.. Joined: Jan 19, Messages: 1 Likes Received: 0. WAW8, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why my C drive memory keeps shrinking! I thought it was Malware since my C drive's memory of GB shrunk down to a terrifying 3.
I've run multiple malware and anti-virus programs but nothing sinister was picked up. Then I read about Vista's pesky Shadow Copies! I went on a few websites and found out ways to remove using the command prompt but nothing worked. Alas, I found this forum 7 years after your post on how to delete manually. It actually worked for me and I now have GB free! Happy New Year, indeed! RizzIAm, Jan 19, Show Ignored Content.
